40 positive moments during the coronavirus pandemic to lift your spirits

The past month has seen one of the biggest changes to the way we operate as a nation in our history. To help prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus pandemic, we have been ordered to stay indoors and leave our homes as little as possible.

When you think about it too much, a deadly virus that easily spreads through human contact and has more or less stopped the world in its tracks, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

Yet, as we adapt and ease into the new normal, we know life won’t always be like this, which is why it’s worth looking on the bright side.

The UK feels unified. We stand on our doorsteps every Thursday at 8pm and clap for our carers , we volunteer in droves to help the NHS, and we practice our masterful queueing tactics at the shops when we need to pick up essentials.

We’ve seen the best in people – 99-year-old war veteran Captain Tom Moore set out to raise £1,000 for the NHS and his tally so far tops £15 million, rainbows showing support for the NHS have popped up in windows and on pavements everywhere and people are joining their neighbours for social distancing street parties.

The planet is benefiting, too. In China’s Hubei province, where the virus originated, it recorded an uptick of ‘good quality air days’ by 21.5 per cent in February this year compared to the same time period last year, as residents self-isolated in their homes; shoals of fish and crabs have become visible in the canals of Venice and the citizens of Northern India can see the Himalayas for the first time due to a drop in air pollution.

There’s always a bright side, a glass half full. We’re in this together, a shared experience like none we’ve ever experienced, and we will get through it.
