Zendaya has told fan she has been left ‘speechless’, as she shared her surprise at receiving her first ever Emmy Awards nomination.

Ahead of this year’s awards, the list of nominees dropped on Tuesday, with the actress, 23, landing a nod in the category for outstanding lead actress in a drama series.

She was nominated for her role in HBO series Euphoria, where she stars as Rue Bennett, and faces competition from Jennifer Aniston (for The Morning Show), Olivia Colman (The Crown), Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), Laura Linney (Ozark) and Sandra Oh (Killing Eve).

Taking to Instagram after the nominees were revealed, Zendaya shared a black and white behind-the-scenes snap and told fans: ‘I’m honestly speechless, my heart is just overflowing with love and gratitude.’

She continued: ‘I’m so incredibly honoured to work beside the talented people that I get to call family. I am a small piece of a big beautiful puzzle and I’m so proud of all of you.’

Sharing her thanks, Zendaya added: ‘Thank you to everyone out there who’s watched and given our show life.

‘Thank you @samlev00 @hbo @a24 for everything and @televisionacad for this beautiful acknowledgment, thank you, thank you, thank you. We out here Emmy nominated y’all!!’

Among those nominated this year include Normal People star Paul Mescal and Kerry Washington for her role in Hulu series Little Fires Everywhere.

Kerry landed an impressive four nominations, meaning she also set a new record for a single person in one season.

The actress, 43, who stars alongside Reese Witherspoon in the show, has been nominated in the categories; outstanding lead actress in a limited series or movie, outstanding variety special, outstanding television movie and outstanding limited series.

This year’s nominations also saw the highest number of Black actors (34.3% compared to 19.8% in 2019) receive nods, with Maya Rudolph nominated twice in the guest comedy actress category for her work on The Good Place and Saturday Night Live.

Pose star Billy Porter, Black-ish’s Anthony Anderson, Tracee Ellis Ross, Regina King, Octavia Spencer and This Is Us star Sterling K. Brown all received nods too.

The Emmy Awards are set to take place on 20 September.
