YouTuber PewDiePie admits he's taking a break from platform after getting 'very tired'

The Swedish blogger and comedian, who gained 102million subscribers, was one of the platform’s most popular stars. He was overtaken earlier his year by T-series, an Indian record label which has now reached around 120 million subscribers. PewDiePie, whose real name is Felix Kjellberg, is known for his video game commentary, but has been the centre of controversy due to accusations of racism and anti-Semitism.

He shared his decision in a video, saying: “I am taking a break from YouTube next year.

“I wanted to say it in advance because I made up my mind. I’m tired. I’m feeling very tired. I don’t know if you can tell.

“Just so you know, early next year I’ll be away for a little while. I’ll explain that later but I wanted to give a heads-up.”

In 2017, PewDiePie used the n-word against another player during a live gaming stream.

He apologised, saying he “didn’t mean that in a bad way”.

Disney ended a joint venture with Mr Kjellberg in the same year after antisemitics references were found in several of his videos.

One included people holding up a sign that read: “Death to all Jews.”

The blogger responded by saying he was “trying to show how crazy the modern world is”.

He then removed a number of his video following the shooting.

The YouTuber said he now understood some of his jokes to be “ultimately offensive”.

Following backlash against his offensive content this year, the blogger promised to donate $50,000 (£37,500) to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL).

The organisation is a non-profit which fights against anti-semitism.

However, he then withdrew the pledge after his fans spread conspiracy theories that he has been forces to make the donation.

In a video, he said: “I made the mistake of picking a charity that I was advised to instead of picking a charity that I’m personally passionate about.

“Which is 100% my fault.”
