You Can Use Any Lamp in Your House as a Tripod

Photographer and YouTuber Peter McKinnon has just shared a brilliant little camera hack that’s blowing people’s minds. In his most recent 2-minute tips video, he shows how any bedside lamp can be used as an impromptu tripod (monopod, actually).

There’s really not much to it. McKinnon simply realized at some point that just about every household lamp with a shade uses a 1/4-20″ screw to hold the shade on top of the lamp. The same 1/4-20″ size that you’ll find on almost every single consumer camera.

Just for kicks, we verified this on two separate lamps in one of our editors’ homes, and it absolutely does work: hack confirmed.

No more propping up your camera on a stack of books… that’s on a chair… that’s still just a little too high or a little too low or a little too wobbly. This makes for a rock-steady solution that almost everybody, regardless of where they live, will have access too.

Check out the video up top to see how it works, and then head over to McKinnon’s insanely popular YouTube channel for more great tips, vlogs, and other inspirational content.
