You can now legally take medical cannabis through US airports – here’s what you need to know

PASSENGERS travelling through the US will now be able to carry medical cannabis such as CBD oil with them after the USA Transport Security Administration (TSA) introduced new rules.

However, there are strict rules about the type of cannabis you can take and how it’s transported.

The TSA has updated the “What Can I Bring” section of its website to reflect news of an FDA-approved epilepsy medication containing CBD oil.

CBD oil is often used as medication for epilepsy, especially for young children.

One father recently explained how the drug stopped his daughter from having up to 100 fits a day.

A spokesperson told Fox News: “TSA was made aware of an FDA-approved drug that contains CBD oil for children who experience seizures from paediatric epilepsy.

“To avoid confusion as to whether families can travel with this drug, TSA immediately updated TSA.gov once we became aware of the issue.”

The “medical marijuana” section of the guidelines now says “products/medications that contain hemp-derived CBD or are approved by the FDA are legal as long as it is produced within the regulations defined by the law under the Agriculture Improvement Act 2018.”

Medications fitting that description can be packed in both checked and carry-on luggage — albeit with special instructions.

The TSA added in an email to Fox News: “Possession of marijuana and certain cannabis-infused products, including some Cannabidiol (CBD) oil products, remain illegal under federal law.

“TSA officers are required to report any suspected violations of law, including possession of marijuana and certain cannabis-infused products.”

The TSA will be briefing its officers on the new policy regarding the FDA-approved drug.

CBD oil is derived from the Cannabis sativa plant, which is often used as a relaxation or for pain relief.

Experts say the levels of THC – the cannabinoid most recognised for giving marijuana its psychoactive properties – often found in commercially available products is far too low to produce a ‘high’ in users.

What are the laws on CBD oil in the UK?

CBD oil is legal in the UK as long as it contains no more than 0.2 per cent of THC.

This can be bought at health stores and and as food supplements.

Cannabis oil, which is different, is not allowed as it has a higher THC content.

For it to be used medicinally, families must have a doctors prescription.

According to the NHS, this is often only prescribed as a last resort for people with severe forms of epilepsy or adults suffering from vomiting caused by chemotherapy.

Six-year-old Alfie Dingley hit the headlines after being banned from taking cannabis oil to stop his seizures, leading to a petition set up to allow doctors to prescribe it.

He was the first Briton to be given a special license for it, although he still faces problems due to import laws.

Last month, a mother had more than £4,000 worth of medicinal cannabis confiscated after she tried to bring it back from the Netherlands for her epileptic daughter.
