Xbox Series X is bigger than you think (in terms of size and popularity)

A series of images comparing the Xbox Series X to other consoles gives a clearer idea of how big it is, as the reveal surpasses that of the Xbox One.

It was a big surprise to see the next gen Xbox revealed at The Game Awards on Friday, but the gamble seems to have paid off for Microsoft.

On the Xbox YouTube channel, the unveil video for Xbox Series X has already passed that of the Xbox One in terms of raw numbers (8 million to 7.1 million) and the proportion of likes to dislikes (232K to 19K for the Xbox Series X compared to 32K to 30K for the Xbox One).

The vagaries of where people saw the videos first and how they were advertised makes close comparisons impossible, but it all seems like good news for Microsoft.

But another interesting detail to emerge since the reveal is a visual comparison between the Xbox Series X and other recent consoles, created by a fan on ResetEra.

The reveal gave the impression the Xbox Series X was unusually small for a console, but that’s not necessarily true.

Microsoft has not released any official size information, but the current estimates suggest it’s 31cm tall and 16cm square.

That compares to 30cm x 24cm x 6cm for the Xbox One X, which is about normal, if not slightly smaller, than average for a console.

It’s theorised that a lot of that space is taken up by fans and cooling, or more precisely a fan that isn’t – unlike the PlayStation 4 – going to sound like a jumbo jet taking off when it’s working.

The fact that Microsoft hasn’t released any official size figures is a little odd, but then they didn’t really announce anything very specific on Friday, just the video and some purposefully vague information that implies a bigger reveal is probably coming next spring.

As for Sony, we still don’t know what the PlayStation 5 will look like, although leaked photos of the dev kit show a rather odd-looking device.

You might have seen the render below doing the rounds recently but it’s just a fan mock-up of what they think it might look like, whose origins also seem to be ResetEra.
