Xbox Live Gold suffers 25% price increase in the UK

25% more expensive from this summer

The cost of using Xbox Live and playing multiplayer is about to go up for Xbox One, and it could all be because of Brexit.

If your Xbox Live Gold subscription is running low then now might be the time to top it up, as from next month prices are going up in the UK. And not by a trivial amount.

UK gamers started receiving emails today warning of the rise, which will see a monthly subscription increase from £6 to £7, three months increase from £15 to £18, and a full 12-month subscription go from £40 to £50.

Microsoft claims the price hike is needed ‘to address changing market conditions’, which some companies have used previously as a euphemism for Brexit.

‘To ensure gamers have consistent pricing for Xbox Live Gold across Europe we are making changes to UK pricing from May 8th, said Microsoft in a statement. ‘This new pricing is aligned to the changes we made in the region in 2016 as we strive to offer our members premium gaming and entertainment services at a fair price.’

Which sounds very much like they’re blaming the falling value of the pound, although what will happen to that in the weeks to come is anyone’s guess.

You can still buy subscriptions at the cheaper price now and they’ll be added to your existing account. You could even buy multiple months and years at once and just stack them up.

The new prices will come into effect on 8 May, but if you’re an existing subscriber you’ve got until 7 August to buy at the lower rate.

The price rise puts the cost of Xbox Live Gold on par with PlayStation Plus, although Sony’s three-month subscription is still slightly more expensive.
