Matt Cardle credits girlfriend Amber Hernaman for helping him make sweet music … about his past Valium addiction.

The Amazing singer opened up about their romance’s winning formula as he dropped-kicked Meghan Markle headlines into the long grass — explaining he can’t stomach the idea of infamy after his X Factor ride left him close to death.

‘Amber has been writing with me. We wrote (new track) Purple Crayon together,’ he said. ‘She is brilliant.

‘We sing in the studio, party and get up to no good just for fun. Then all of a sudden she was like, “Why don’t we write a song?” We did, and Purple Crayon came out.

‘It was like, “Okay this works”. She played piano to grade six and is a brilliant lyricist. It has been amazing to do that with Amber.’

Getting candid about the track’s dark lyrics, Matt told Guilty Pleasures: ‘The sentiment of the song is about the trouble I had with Valium.’

The lyrics go ‘I found my own way out, two feet above the ground’ and Matt blended imagery from his favourite children’s book (Purple Crayon) with a very dark subject.

Explaining there was no shame to his pills confession, the 37-year-old said: ‘I do challenge anyone to f***ing go through what I did. It’s not easy. Having your face and name thrust into the limelight to not have the support from places you would expect — the record label being one of them — that all amounts to a pretty tough time.’

The 2010 X Factor winner admits being cut loose left him dangerously close to being another tragic star.

‘If I don’t talk about it, it’s not helping anyone else in that situation. I didn’t realise how dangerous it was and how close I was to death on a number of occasions because of how recklessly I was abusing it (Valium). How casually I was eating so many pills and drinking so much alcohol. That is how we have lost so many people. There’s no shame in it — it was pretty tough at the time.

‘It was episodes of falling apart,’ he added. ‘Everyone knew who I was but it wasn’t about the music.

‘It was that fight to make it about the music. Not about Matt Cardle from X Factor. I take my music and myself so seriously. That was one of the struggles to be taken seriously, rather than be a face on the TV.’

The Memphis star hit the headlines again last year, with his supposed past links to the Duchess Of Sussex but extinguished rumours immediately.

‘I could have perpetuated my fame more than I wanted to. I could have gone on “Big Brother” and “Celebrity Come Dating” but I said it from the beginning. If I am not known for my music, I don’t want to be known. I don’t just want to be famous. I never wanted that,’ he added.

He said of the nonsense links to Meghan: ‘It made me feel f***ing awful because it was nothing.

‘Other people could have milked it for weeks. Even if there was something behind it, which there wasn’t, I don’t want that kind of attention. I want people to go, “I heard Purple Crayon, it was dope.”

‘If this album takes off and everyone is in my face again… great because it’s about the music. But I’m not going on Dancing On Ice.’

You Me At Six frontman Josh Franceschi says Tyson Fury helped him deal with suicidal thoughts.

The singer, 30, was inspired by the way the boxing champ battled depression before his 2018 return to the ring. And new song Finish What I Started ‘is about a time I was very close to ending my life’, he said.
