X Factor: Celebrity's Kevin McHale says Glee won't give him an advantage on show

He rose to fame singing on the hit teen drama Glee, but Kevin McHale thinks X Factor: Celebrity is a whole other ball game.

The 31-year-old is one of the celebs taking part in the second instalment of the star-studded singing competition, which debuts tomorrow night.

Landing his breakout role as Artie Abrams on Glee in 2009, Kevin became recognised as the wheelchair-using, bespectacled student at the heart of the show.

Speaking about the experience, the US actor explained that his time on Glee wouldn’t give him an unfair advantage on X Factor.

Kevin pointed out that acting and singing in a TV series is completely different to performing solo on stage.

He said: “There’s a difference between when you are out there by yourself trying to make it work, and being you as in this is Kevin McHale choosing to sing this song.

Kevin said singing live is very different to acting

“If it works great, if it sucks it’s your fault. When you’re a character you have everything to fall back on.

“You have the writer who made this happen, the person who chose the song and if it sucks it doesn’t matter because the character chose to do that.”

Opening up about his worries before the season premiere, the Texan star admitted his biggest fear was “being bad”.

Kevin lists his musical inspirations as acts like Frank Ocean, Lizzo, Lauryn Hill, and says he grew up watching Britney Spears and NSYNC perform.

He added: “It’s hard to watch myself, yes in one breath I am excited not to be a character and for people to see me as the human, and what I might be like as an artist.

“But it is tough and it’s hard to watch me, and I was watching and thinking, ‘I’m coming off a bit boring.'”

Kevin added: “It’s weird being yourself and I just hope people like me.”

X Factor: Celebrity airs tomorrow night at 8.35pm on ITV.
