Louis, 66, was one of the original X Factor judges to sit on the panel alongside music mogul Simon Cowell, 59, and Sharon Osbourne, 66, when the show launched in 2004.
The Irishmen sat on the panel until 2014 and later returned for another two year stint in 2016 before being stepping down from the role again.
With an All Star series reportedly in the pipeline, as well as judges Robbie Williams, 45, and Ayda Field, 40, stepping away from their duties from the panel, there could be an opening for Louis to make his comeback.
Speaking with the Mirror Online, the former ITV talent show judge revealed he is in talks with Simon on making a return alongside Sharon.
Louis said: “I’m speaking to Simon. Let’s see,” before going on to add: “Sharon would be great,” when asked if he would want the original trio back together.
Could this be a hint the former judges will be coming back for a third stint on the show to replace Robbie and Ayda?
Earlier this year, Robbie and Ayda announced the news they were quitting the show on Instagram, with the Rock DJ hitmaker explaining the couples decision to his 1.8 million followers.
In the post, Robbie began: “A quick update from Team Williams… it’s been a very busy year so far. Vegas has been incredible and we cannot wait for June and July to do it all again.”
Later on, he added: “Sadly though it’s impossible to do everything … and we’re gutted to tell you we won’t be able to return to The X Factor this year.”
Simon has recently spoken out about the husband and wife leaving the panel after sitting as judges for just one series and reportedly asking for a pay rise despite being paid a reported £10 million to appear on the show the year before.
Speaking with The Sun, Simon explained about the : “It was no secret it was millions and millions of pounds.
“I am going to be really honest with you — and this is no disrespect to Robbie or anyone else who has been on the panel — my focus this year is mainly about the people who are coming on the show to compete.”
The Britain’s Got Talent judge continued: “I’m probably talking myself out of a job here, but I think there has been so much emphasis on the judges. We’ve lost sight of the contestants.”
With Louis hoping Sharon will return alongside, the former X Factor judge spoke on Loose Women earlier this week about a possible comeback.
Sharon told the panel: “Nobody’s asked me,” but added: “It was the best part of my life. That part of my life is gone.”
