Rey Mysterio has hinted a WWE team with Cain Velasquez is still on after a potential Mexico City match fell through.
The current United States champion helped introduce the former UFC superstar into the world of sports entertainment in October as Velasquez sought to former mixed martial arts rival Brock Lesnar’s attack on Rey and his son Dominik.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk, Mysterio said: ‘I would love to! We were so excited, we were actually getting ready to do a tag match in Mexico City, and that ended up going another direction, but we got the vibe.
‘We’re so excited about potentially teaming up together and seeing where it takes us.’
And the master of the 619 thinks Cain could exceed his impressive fighting accomplishments – which include 14 wins in MMA – in the WWE if he fulfills his early potential.

‘I think he’s doing an incredible job,’ Rey added. ‘His background is already cemented – he comes from the background of wrestling. With what he accomplished in the UFC, there’s no doubt in my mind that he can accomplish that – or much more – with the WWE.’
Rey himself is now a Grand Slam champion having claimed the WWE, tag team, Intercontinental and now United States titles over his illustrious career, and he teased the possibility of the iconic championship getting a redesign.
‘I was actually asked that question the other day – it was actually between my son and I,’ he revealed. ‘”Pops, you should try and design a new title”.

‘I haven’t sat down and just stared at it to try and see if there’s something that we can add or make better – but overall that’s got a lot of history. I think if something ever were to pop up in my mind while I’m still champion, I’d take that chance to change it!’
Whether the title gets a revamped look or not, Mysterio is still overjoyed to be trusted with its legacy at this stage in his career.
‘It means everything to me, especially at this stage in my career where I not only inspire my fans, but also my son who’s [becoming] part of this world,’ he added:
‘So it’s definitely a big weight on my shoulders, but its a good type of weight. It’s not pressure – I’m enjoying this, very, very much. And it makes me Grand Slam champion!’
