Kadeisha Buchanan scored on a header in the 45th minute as Canada edged Cameroon 1-0 in a surprisingly tight match on Monday in Group E play at the Women’s World Cup in Montpellier, France.

The goal came off a corner kick as Janine Beckie delivered a ball toward the box and Buchanan came charging forward to head the ball. It took a downward trajectory and bounced past Cameroon goalie Annette Ngo Ndom into the net.

“It was a great cross from Janine and I really just needed to get a touch on it,” Buchanan said afterward. “I’m delighted to have my first World Cup goal and hopefully there are more to come.”

Canada took 16 shots with four being on target. Just one of Cameroon’s five shots were on goal.

Argentina 0, Japan 0

Argentina pulled off a stunning result by playing Japan to a scoreless tie in Group D play at Paris.

Argentina was 0-6 all-time in Cup play prior to the surprising draw. Japan put just three of eight shots on target, while only one of Argentina’s five shots were on the mark.

“This point is really important for us,” Argentina captain Estefania Banini said afterward. “I think we’re able to reflect upon what Argentina is and what it means as a team. … We believe that we can continue fighting and we can get more points on board, and not go home with just one.”
