WTA roundup: Mladenovic upsets Svitolina to reach Zhengzhou semis


Kristina Mladenovic smacked 59 winners while recording a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 upset of second-seeded Elina Svitolina of Ukraine to reach the semifinals of the Zhengzhou Open in China.

The unseeded Mladenovic overcame 55 unforced errors — including 12 double faults — while dispatching Svitolina (26 winners, 20 unforced errors), who was a semifinalist in last week’s U.S. Open. The Frenchwoman will next face seventh-seeded Croat Petra Martic, who beat fourth-seeded Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus 7-5, 5-7, 6-4.

Top-seeded Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic beat sixth-seeded Sofia Kenin 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 to reach the semis. Pliskova will face Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic, who registered a 6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-4 victory over China’s Saisai Zheng.

Jiangxi Open

Fifth-seeded Rebecca Peterson of Sweden outlasted third-seeded Magda Linette of Poland 6-3, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (5) to advance to the semifinals in Nanchang, China.

Peterson will next face Serbia’s Nina Stojanovic, who posted a 6-7 (5) 6-4, 6-4 victory over seventh-seeded Ukrainian Kateryna Kozlova 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4.

Fourth-seeded Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan reached the semis by knocking off sixth-seeded Swiss Viktorija Golubic 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. Shuai Peng also advanced by beating Lin Zhu 6-4, 7-6 (5) in a battle between Chinese women.

Hana-cupid Japan Women’s Open

Japan’s Nao Hibino hit 25 winners to upset top-seeded Su-Wei Hsieh of Chinese Taipei 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the semifinals in Hiroshima, Japan.

Hibino, who made 27 unforced errors, will next face Mihaela Buzarnescu. The Romanian was a 6-4, 7-5 winner over third-seeded Alison van Uytvanck of Belgium.

Second-seeded Russian Veronika Kudermetova defeated eighth-seeded German Laura Siegemund 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 to reach the other semi. She will face Japan’s Misaki Doi, who posted a 7-5, 6-1 victory over seventh-seeded Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain.
