WoW Classic release date update may divide World of Warcraft fans

World of Warcraft Classic developer Blizzard has dropped a big hint about the future of the game.

With the WoW Classic release date just a few days away, Blizzard has been fielding questions from inquisitive fans.

Specifically, Blizzard has suggested that WoW Classic might be followed by even more vintage content.

As a bit of background, World of Warcraft Classic is a separate server option that rolls the game back to something closely resembling its launch state.

It will be available to new and existing World of Warcraft fans from August 27.

“Aid Mankrik on his tragic quest in an era before the Barrens was sundered in two; raid Molten Core with level-60 heroes’ original abilities and talents; regale the inns of Azeroth with tales of PvP at Tarren Mill; and much more,” Blizzard explains.

“Play with the conveniences of modern Blizzard Battle.net and WoW technology such as Blizzard friends lists; select UI improvements; enhancements designed to ensure stability and fair play; and all the latest under-the-hood engine updates to support players’ current hardware.”

Ahead of the release of World of Warcraft Classic, Blizzard was asked if it planned to release older WoW expansions like The Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King.

“We’ve done most of the hard work by bringing back 1.12 so progressing to Burning Crusade would be a lot easier for us,” Blizzard replied.

“Our plan is to identify everything we need to do should we ever decide to go this route. We want to be sensitive to the desires of our players.

“Some may want BC and some may not. We’ll be following the Classic community closely to help determine what our next steps should be.”

The biggest stumbling block is whether or not fans would embrace the add-on content.

As Blizzard points out in a follow-up post, some features introduced in World of Warcraft expansions wouldn’t be well received by the community.

“It’s less clear what our direction should be with BC and WotLK,” the post continues.

“As you point out, it is likely that some features of these expansions will not be universally embraced by the Classic community. We’ll be following player progression and sentiment to help guide us in our next steps.”
