WoW Classic DOWN: Blizzard confirm new WoW DDoS attack on servers

Blizzard has confirmed that a second WoW Classic DDoS attack is currently affecting World of Warcraft servers.

The first wave of server crashes struck yesterday and were predicted by a Twitter account, which has now been shut down.

This was followed by an official confirmation from Blizzard, revealing that a DDoS attack had knocked servers and realms offline.

It’s currently unclear how long disruption will last today but it’s fair to say that fans aren’t happy with the situation.

“We are currently monitoring a DDOS attack against network providers which is affecting latency/connections to our games,” a message from Blizzard explains.

“Our teams are currently investigating issues impacting realm stability. Thank you all for your reports.”

It took hours for the WoW Classic servers to return to normal on Saturday and its unclear how long it could take today.

“I went to the Twitter of the guy from the attack yesterday (before it was suspended) and he said he was going to bed and ‘will be back tomorrow’,” One user writes.

“So most likely him again. Unless, as others have said, servers are just having their own issues.”

A distributed denial of service attack is an attempt to bring down a large network by overwhelming it with bogus requests.

The most common way to pull this off is by using botnets and creating fake traffic, making it impossible for the service to fulfil its standard commands.

It’s unclear if this DDoS attack is being conducted by the same group as yesterday or that servers are being targeted by different people.

The only good news regarding today’s DDOS attack is that Blizzard is probably more prepared to deal with the situation. And there are early signs that today’s DDoS attack will take less time to overcome.

Here is the statement they shared with fans yesterday on the WoW Classic server situation: “Today, Saturday, September 7, the World of Warcraft service has been negatively impacted by an ongoing distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack.

“For several hours today, we’ve repeatedly seen WoW realms targeted and taken offline by the attacker(s).

“It is our top priority to resolve any issues that prevent players from being able to smoothly play World of Warcraft.

“However, it is the nature of DDoS attacks that players may experience the game becoming unavailable. If you are disconnected or have issues logging in, please be patient and wait a few minutes before trying again.”
