Would you wear a high-fashion harness?

Spring 2019 will be remembered among the style set has the exact point when the fashion harness became a thing

First seen on the Louis Vuitton SS19 catwalk, artistic director Virgil Abloh sent his models out wearing gun holster harnesses. Alexander McQueen, Prada, Fendi and Gucci all followed with their versions of the utilitarian accessory.

No one thought the harness would actually catch on, but catch on it did. Much like dad trainers before it, the highly Instagrammable trend was quickly embraced by both A-listers (we’re looking at you, Timothée Chalamet) and street stylers.

It didn’t take long for fast fashion high street stores to follow suit and places like ASOS, Nasty Gal and PrettyLittleThing now stock an extensive range of harness styles.

If you dare, here’s how to make the accessory (somewhat) wearable…

1. The Embellished Gun Holster

Timothée Chalamet and Michael B Jordan were just a few of the stars to experiment with the contemporary accessory during awards season 2019, opting for a classic Vuitton design with varying embellishments, from glitter to florals.

Not hitting a red carpet anytime soon fellas? Consider the harness as an alternative to the humble bow tie at your next black tie event.

2. The Fendi Multi Pouch Belt

An infinitely more subtle entry into the harness trend is the multi pouch belt.

The SS19 Fendi creation was by far the most coveted harness hybrid over fashion week AW19, with both men and women finding innovative ways to wear the £1,090 leather belt. You have to admit, it looks chicer than expected.

From Vuitton-inspired twin bags to Kendall Jenner’s front pouch, there are a plethora of shapes and sizes available. Probably not for everyday use, bu you have it admit, it would be a great festival wardrobe addition.

4. The Louis Vuitton Vest

Not one for the faint hearted, say hello to harness vests or ‘utility gilets’, as Virgil Abloh calls them.

The military-inspired layer by Louis Vuitton comes in everything from flashy neon to understated white and is designed to be worn over a shirt. Bella Hadid was the first boundary-pushing celebrity to be seen in the creation, layering it over a shirt dress and pairing with chunky trainers.
