She’s finally here. Swinging her lasso and riding on lightning, yes, really. She loops her lasso over the actual bolts of lightning. Hey, she’s a goddess, don’t forget. Gadot’s Amazonian superhero sequel is one of the biggest and most highly anticipated movies of next year and we finally got our first proper look at whats she’s up to in the 1980s. And how exactly Chris Pines supposedly dead Steve Trevor is back…
Setting during the 1980s, Wonder Woman 2 sees Diana Prince taking on the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
Meanwhile, Kristen Wiig is “a British anthropologist who, after locating the lost city of Urzkartagan and stumbling into an ancient ritual, becomes the avatar of their Cheetah god.”
Wonder Woman 1984 also sees the return of Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor. The WWI pilot perished in Wonder Woman, but director Patty Jenkins shared a picture of him in the follow-up, igniting feverish speculation and theories.
Not only is he somehow back, but he’s the same age he was in the first film and dressed in 1980s clothes. How is that possible?
When they are finally reunited all we get is a breathy shocked “Steve.” He replies, you guessed it, “Diana.”
He later tells her “The world needs you.” And then “Everybody will see.”
This implies she has remained hidden since World War I but will finally reveal her true identity.
Of course, this sets up problems of continuity and timelines for the Justice League movies. Bruce Wayne and everyone else would definitely have heard of her before if she goes public with her powers in the 1980s.
The film sets up Game of Thrones and Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal as some sort of mogul with evil plans.
We already know that Kristen Wiig will be playing villainess Cheetah but there is no hint of that so far in the trailer, where she shares a friendly chat with Diana about falling in love.
What we do get are some thrilling shots of Diana’s homeland, Themiscyra. It is most likely a flashback since it shows all the adult Amazonians and young Diana showing off their skills.
And let’s not forget, most of all, Wonder Woman’s giant golden wings sprouting from her eagle armour. Epic.
