It’s been a long time coming, but the first trailer for superhero sequel Wonder Woman 1984 is finally here, teasing the next big-screen adventure for Gal Gadot’s lasso-wielding Amazonian and featuring big hair, big shoulder pads and even bigger action.
Set nearly 70 years after the World War 1-themed original, Wonder Woman 1984 will see Gadot’s hero going up against Pedro Pascal’s formidable businessman Maxwell Lord and Kristen Wiig’s friend-turned-foe Barbara Minerva – who becomes our hero’s feline-powered nemesis, Cheetah.
The film, which will be the ninth official entry in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), also sees the return of Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor, who seemingly carked it in a plane explosion at the end of the first movie; how exactly he finds his way back is integral to the movie’s story, according to director Patty Jenkins, and “not just a gimmick”.
The trailer debuted at São Paulo comic convention CCXP, where it was introduced on stage by Gadot and Jenkins to an army of fans. It made its way online immediately afterwards – and you can watch it below…
The trailer does a good job of establishing the ’80s setting and introducing the new and returning characters, without giving away too much of the film’s plot. And, of course, with this being a big-budget comic-book blockbuster, it also showcases some huge action set-pieces – including one in which Wonder Woman swings from bolts of lightning (!) – and a brand-new golden costume for Gadot’s hero, complete with some natty-looking wings.
The 2017 original was one of the DCEU’s most well-received movies, not to mention one of its most commercially successful chapters – raking in over $800 million at the worldwide box office. Can WW1984 better its achievements? We’ll finally find out when the film is released on 5 June 2020.
