When the weather heats up, your rubbish bin gets filled with all sorts of smells, and with that comes lots of flies.

It can be a real pain, especially if they then make their way into your house.

And we don’t even want to think about what happens if you end up with maggots in there.

But one woman has revealed a hack to discourage the bugs from setting up camp among your bin bags.

Posting on TikTok, @sisterpledgecleans explains how, after cleaning the bin, she takes some table salt and pours it into the bottom while it’s still empty.

She explains: ‘Here’s a great hack for stopping flies in your bins.

‘Sprinkle a generous amount of table salt in the bottom of clean bins.

‘The salt soaks up any leaked fluid and flies and maggots die when they feed on it.’

The woman uses it in her food waste bin but you could use it in your larger wheelie bins too.

The video has been viewed over four million times and received over 400,000 likes.

Many people commented to say how grateful they were for the idea.

One said: ‘Oh thank you!! Our black bin is full of flies, yet our compost/food bin isn’t. Makes no sense.’

Another added: ‘Woah I only put newspapers but still there are random maggots in the summer even with frequent disposal. Thanks.’

Others suggested using bicarbonate of soda instead as it also helps to soak up odours, leaving your bin smelling better.
