Slow cookers are a great kitchen tool – just turn it on, add your food and come home to a delicious meal.

But now people have realised they can be used for something else – candle making.

One woman posted on Facebook to show how to create your own candles for your home or to give as gifts.

You need four things – soy wax and wicks (which you can pick up easily online), clean, dry jars (make sure they are heat safe) and coloured crayons.

If you have kids, it’s a great way to use up some of their leftover or broken wax drawing materials.

To create the candles, the Australian woman shared how she adds 3cm of water to the bottom of slow cooker.

She then adds soy wax (filling roughly it to the point where she wants the candle to start) and sticks a crayon in the top.

The candle will come out as a pastel shade of whatever crayon you choose.

Once the wax has been added, she places the candles in the slow cooker and cooks them on a high setting for three hours.

After that time, she carefully removes them from the cooker, using oven gloves or tongs and places them on a heat proof mat.

She then quickly adds a wick to the melted wax, looping it around a toothpick or skewer to keep it in place and leaves them to cool and set.

If you want a scented candle, you can add some essential oils at this stage. Once it is set, the woman then trims the wick down.

You can decorate the jars however you like.

And make sure you give your slow cooker a good clean before using it again for food.
