Willian has urged his Chelsea teammates to be more clinical in front of goal following their 2-0 victory over Brighton and Hove Albion at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Brighton managed to frustrate their hosts during the first-half but conceded just five minutes into the second period after Jorginho dispatched a penalty following a trip on Mason Mount.

Chelsea had numerous opportunities to kill the game off afterwards but it wasn’t until Willian’s deflected effort 15 minutes from time that they had some breathing space.

Leading goalscorer Tammy Abraham, Marcos Alonso, Ross Barkley and Pedro Rodriguez all had great chances to score but couldn’t take them and Willian felt Chelsea should have won more convincingly.

‘We needed it [the result],’ Willian said. ‘We have been working hard every day, every game and this time we finally got the result, got the three points at home and we have to carry on. We have to continue in the same way.

‘The game could have been 3-0 or 4-0. In the first half, we created a lot of chances and I think we have to be more clinical.

‘We cannot miss chances like this and we have to now think about the next game.’

The win was a welcome one as Chelsea had only won one of their opening five homes matches of the season, a 7-1 thrashing of League Two Grimsby Town on Wednesday night.

Frank Lampard echoed Willian’s sentiments regarding Chelsea’s lack of ruthlessness but he was delighted to see his side keep a first clean sheet of the campaign in their tenth game.

‘It’s good for all of us, it’s good for the confidence of the group, the clean sheet, without a doubt,’ he said.

‘That’s the big plus and the performance is a plus. I though thought we played well.’
