Willian provides update over his future amid Chelsea contract uncertainty

Chelsea winger Willian has insisted he would be willing to continue playing for the club even if matches take place after his current contract expires.

The Premier League season has been suspended until April 3 at the earliest due to the coronavirus crisis, but there are fears that it could be delayed even further.

That means matches could be played over the summer, but presents a problem as the likes of Willian and a number of other Premier League stars’ contracts expire at the end of June.

But speaking on a live Facebook chat to Brazilian TV channel Esporte Interativo Willian said he would be happy to represent the club even if he is not contracted to them.

Willian could continue to play for the Blues even after his contract has expired

“My contract really ends I think in July,” he said. “And if I had to play on those dates, in these months, I think it would be no problem for me to end the League in a way which would be loyal to the club, as they always were with me. Regardless of a signed paper.

“But it’s clear that this is not a certainty, we don’t know what can happen. But without a doubt, as always, I will always be ready to give the best to my club regardless of my contract situation.”

Willian’s words will come as a boost to manager Frank Lampard, with the Blues still in pole position to qualify for next season’s Champions League if and when the current campaign continues.

Fellow Chelsea players Olivier Giroud and Pedro are also soon to be out of contract, and it remains to be seen if they follow Willian in agreeing to play for the club over the summer should it be necessary.

Willian has been at Stamford Bridge since 2013 but looks set for a change of scene in the near future, and the likes of Barcelona have been linked with the 31-year-old in the past.
