Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta believes there’s been a marked improvement in Willian’s form in recent weeks and says the Brazilian can be ‘crucial’ for the club before the season ends.

The 32-year-old has endured a difficult debut campaign at the Emirates since his free transfer move from Chelsea last summer.

Willian has made 30 appearances for the club in all competitions this term but he’s yet to score for the Gunners.

While Willian has lost his regular starting berth since the start of the year, his performances have shown a marked improvement with the Brazilian registering four assists in his last five appearances.

Arteta believes the former Chelsea man is now starting to show some of his best form and says Willian can salvage his season by making ‘crucial’ contributions before the campaign finishes.

‘I think he can reach a higher performance level because his potential is so big,’ Arteta told reporters ahead of the side’s Europa League quarter-final clash against Slavia Prague.

‘He needs to contribute to the team and the team to be stable so he can provide what he needs and be able to express himself on the pitch.

‘It’s true that in recent weeks we’ve seen a much version of him and his contribution when he’s playing has been really positive. His form is going to be crucial for the team in the last two months [of the season].’

Despite Arteta’s comments, it’s uncertain whether Willian will be selected to start on Thursday.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Nicolas Pepe were given the nod against Liverpool on Saturday but Arteta described his side’s display as one of the worst of his tenure.

It would suggest that the Spaniard will make changes for the game against Slavia, who knocked Rangers out in the last round.
