Will Young blooming thrilled as Gardener’s World segment on mental health praised


He’s sitting at the top of the midweek album charts, but that’s not all Will Young has to celebrate this week.

The pop star was thrilled when Monty Don praised his Gardeners’ World segment on mental health.

“I was validated by the gardening God,” says Will. “Monty is the svengali of all.”

The singer estimates he has spent around £500,000 on therapy, but credits gardening with helping ease his anxiety. He even tended to the estate at a residential treatment centre he attended.

“I dug out some beds, planted dahlias and sweet peas, made a compost heap and mowed the lawn, and it was great,” remembers Will. “It was my therapy.

“It’s such a creative, artistic thing to do.”

Will’s struggles with anxiety and depression lead him to quit Strictly Come Dancing in 2016. Now he has a new album out, Lexicon, which he compares to an “unplanned pregnancy” after he considered quitting music 18 months ago.

He will be heading to LA next year to work on a musical drama TV series after vowing to leave the UK if Boris Johnson ever becomes Prime Minister.

“It’s tied in quite nicely,” he laughs.
