History is repeating itself, folks. Four years ago, we shared the news that Will Smith was producing a new series based on The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air. Today, that exact same story is doing the rounds again.
Yep, it seems that Big Willie is still planning to return to the world of The Fresh Prince, to act as a producer for some form of new series. In a big article about Smith, who is currently doing the promotional rounds for Gemini Man (you can read our review here), trade publication The Hollywood Reporter notes that Smith’s company Westbrook is beavering away on a Fresh Prince project.
“In addition to producing Smith-fronted film projects,” the article reads, “Westbrook is developing a Fresh Prince of Bel-Air spinoff series (he still earns hefty royalties from the 1990s NBC sitcom, now licensed to air in 193 territories).” And that’s all the info that we’ve currently got.
It wouldn’t really be The Fresh Prince without the Fresh Prince himself, but it remains to be seen if Smith will appear on-screen in this series. Of course, we’d like him to show up, especially since the original show was absolutely his vehicle.
What we’d like to see most? A nice reversal of the original formula, where a middle-aged Will has to adopt a nothing-like-him teenager, could be quite compelling. Maybe make it Carlton’s son or something? At the moment, though, the plot of the show is completely under wraps.
We’ll let you know when we hear more. Until then, ‘Yo homes! Smell you later!’
