Will Mellor recalled the time he accidentally put down someone else’s cat, after mistaking the pet for his own.

Yes, seriously.

Appearing on an instalment of his podcast with Ralf Little, aptly named Two Pints with Will and Ralf, he explained they had kept the remains in an urn – without realising it wasn’t their moggy.

Setting the scene, the 44-year-old told his pal they had two pedigree Bengal cats in the household.

However, the felines often disappeared from their home – with one, named Leo, going missing for eight months.

‘He went missing for like eight months, so I thought he’s not coming back,’ Will said. ‘I get a knock on the door… “We’ve got your cat”. It was haggard. I thought “Where’s he been living?!”

‘He had something wrong with his throat. I took him to the vet. They said, “He’s got throat cancer, really bad, we advise you put him down”.

‘I said, we’ve just got him back, my daughter’s going to be upset… So I brought him home…’

Will revealed his children took pictures with the cat and spent the last day with him, before returning to the vets the following day.

And he was so overcome with emotions at the thought of ‘Leo’ being put down, staff asked if he wanted to be taken aside.

They then bought the ‘cheapest urn’ for the cat’s ashes, and put the memorial ‘on the side’ at their home.

But this is when things took a turn, with another knock at the door soon after.

“Anyway, about a month goes by, the buzzer goes…“We’ve got your cat, it’s been run over”,’ the Two Pints actor said.

‘It was someone else’s cat…

‘I’ve put down someone else’s cat!’

Will insisted there was a chip in the now deceased moggy, and he noticed it was the wrong address at the time, but the vet was adamant that the pet was his.

‘So I’m like, ‘Who the f**k is on my windowsill then? I’ve got the ashes of someone’s cat on my windowsill, and they don’t know where the cat is,’ he questioned. ‘I’ve just killed it.

‘We’ve got our cat back now, his hip is smashed and he’s been run over…’

While his children were ‘over the moon’ to have Leo back, Will had to take the cat to the vet once again and get his his hip looked at.

‘£5,000 in vet bills later… Do you know how much it is for a f**king drip on a cat overnight? A saline drip? It’s a fortune,’ the star fumed.

‘Window left open, the f**ker f**ks off and he’s not been back since.

‘I’ve not seen him, cost me a fortune, he’s gone. I couldn’t believe it. I was fuming.

‘He’s gone. He’s cost me a fortune and he’s just pissed off as soon as he was fit enough.’

But there are now more cats and kittens in the Mellor household, as Will’s other cat has just given birth.

Maybe get them all chipped ASAP?
