Will Jeremy Hunt be the next Prime Minister?

Jeremy Richard Strensham Hunt was born in November 1966.

The 52-year-old was raised in Surrey and attended the prestigious Charterhouse School before going on to Oxford and studying Philosophy, Politics and Economics, the favoured course of future political leaders.

Hunt was at Oxford at the same time as former PM David Cameron and the man he succeeded as Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson.

Following a number of roles in the shadow cabinet, the MP for South West Surrey was made Minister for the Olympics and then Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.

In 2012 he was appointed Secretary of State for Health. During the 2016 EU referendum, Mr Hunt supported Remain but a year later said he had changed his view and now backed Brexit.

He is the MP for South West Surrey.

On June 10 he officially stepped forward as a candidate for the leadership of the Conservative Party and of course UK Prime Minister.

The odds of his success are currently 4/1, according to Paddy Power.

Bookies thought his chances of success were greatly improved after Boris Johnson and his girlfriend Carrie Symonds were heard rowing in her flat in Camberwell, South London.

What is Jeremy Hunt’s stance on abortion?

The Tory leadership frontrunner sparked controversy when he announced during an interview with Sky that he believed the abortion limit should be halved.

This would be from the current 24 weeks, down to 12.

He said his stance on abortion was a “matter of conscience”.

When did Jeremy Hunt become Health Secretary?

In a Cabinet reshuffle Hunt was moved from the job of Culture Secretary to Health on May 12, 2010, in David Cameron’s administration.

He remained in the role when Theresa May became Prime Minister and stayed in the job until July 9, 2018, becoming the longest-serving health secretary in British political history.

He was moved to the Foreign Office when Boris Johnson resigned over the Chequers Agreement relating to Brexit.

Before he was in charge of the NHS he had previously co-authored a book which called for the UK’s health system “to be replaced by a new system of health provision in which people would pay money into personal health accounts, which they could then use to shop around for care from public and private providers. Those who could not afford to save enough would be funded by the state.”

He dominated headlines during a row with junior doctors and the British Medical Association over plans to launch a seven day NHS.

His proposals would have made huge changes to their contracts and working hours.

Shortly before he left the Department of Health for the Foreign Office Mr Hunt secured £20billion of additional funding for the NHS to be spread over five years.

What’s the Foreign Secretary’s net worth?

The former management consultant is one of the richest members of the Cabinet.

His net worth was estimated to be around £14million, following the sale of his firm Hotcourses in 2017.

Hunt set up Hotcourses with childhood friend Mike Elms in 1990.

The firm releases information about educational training courses.

Britain’s new Foreign Secretary has said he will use his windfall to “campaign for causes I believe in”, once he leaves politics.
