Will Easter eggs be limited to one per person as supermarkets impose restrictions amid coronavirus outbreak?

As coronavirus stockpiling slows down, supermarkets are loosening their grip on the products that were previously under restrictions, such as eggs, pasta and toilet paper.

This is good news ahead of Easter, for those concerned that chocolate eggs would be added to the list.

Most supermarkets appear to have stocked up generously and shelves are still full of holiday treats, but this could change in coming days.

So what are the restrictions on Easter eggs – if any?

Will Easter eggs be limited to one per person?

The joy of hunting for Easter eggs is a tradition in many British households (while in others, traditions involve scoffing chocolate egg after chocolate egg until you feel a bit nauseous).

This may be another pleasure taken away by the coronavirus crisis – but probably not.

Sainsbury’s

Rejoice, as just the other week, Sainsbury’s announced that restrictions around Easter eggs would be removed as of last Sunday (5 April), though limitations on items such as milk and pasta will remain.

‘We have been working hard with our suppliers to improve our product availability,’ said the chain’s chief executive.

‘Most people are now just buying what they need for themselves and their families. This means we now often have stock on the shelves all day and at the end of the day.’

That being said, if you have a known chocolate egg hoarder in your neighbourhood, get in there sooner rather than later.

Tesco

Tesco has followed in a similar vein.

Previously, customers were only allowed to buy at most three of most items, but the restriction around Easter eggs has now been lifted.

But if you were hoping to make your own chocolate eggs at home or bake other Easter treats, note that there is still a limit on home baking goods like flour (if you can even find any flour).

Aldi

Get your trolley ready, because there are no limits on Easter eggs at Aldi either.

In fact, most limits have already been removed, with the exception of some essential items.

Acting as the Easter bunny this year, Aldi has partnered with Neighbourly, an online platform for good causes, to drop off half a million eggs to vulnerable families and children.

And, shoppers who pop in before 11 April, might even get their hands on a free egg as Aldi is giving up up 50 per day, just to bring a smile to people’s faces.

That’s the spirit.

Asda

Same here, Asda has no limitation on Easter eggs.

But don’t leave your shopping until late, Asda stores will no longer be open 24/7 but close at 8pm on Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Monday.

Waitrose

All Easter treats are limitless at Waitrose, but other restrictions still apply – so don’t go nuts on the toilet paper or pasta stock this weekend.

But hey, at least you have the chocolate (and that’s the important part, right?).

Or if you can’t find your favourite brand, you might be able to order a delivery directly.
