Wijnaldum urges Liverpool to learn Sheff Utd lesson that can help in Man City title duel

Liverpool star Georginio Wijnaldum has warned his side that they need to create more chances and play with higher tempo to beat Manchester City to the Premier League title.

Wijnaldum scored the winner in Liverpool’s tight 1-0 win over Sheffield United on Saturday.

The Dutchman’s late volley clinched another valuable three points for Jurgen Klopp’s men to keep their lead at the top of the table over City as Dean Henderson spilled his shot.

The Reds failed to create too much during the 90 minutes but were praised for the fact they came away from Bramall Lane with the spoils despite a sub-par performance.

Wijnaldum wasn’t happy with the way Liverpool played, stating that they were too slow in their approach against the Blades.

“The way they set up [made it difficult]. The way we played wasn’t that good,” he said.

“Low tempo not a high tempo. We didn’t come enough between the lines but we did create chances. Learning things after this will help us.”

But the former Newcastle man did say that it was a positive Liverpool won the game despite not playing well – a trait often associated with Premier League-winning sides.

“I think progress we have made is that we are winning the games we haven’t played well in,” Wijnaldum added.

“Even last season, towards the end, we didn’t play really good but we were just trying to collect as many points as possible. Hopefully when we don’t play well we can still win games.

“Every win feels like a big win now – even against Chelsea we were struggling in the second half and we still won that game.

“[Saturday] was really difficult but we still won it. You see we make progression with what we did. Back in previous years we had to play good to win the games.

“Now we play bad and still win games, until now. Up to now it has been good but we have to make sure it stays like that. We still have to have the progression and do even better.”

Liverpool’s next clash comes against Red Bull Salzburg in the Champions League on Wednesday before facing Leicester at Anfield on Saturday,
