Why We're Backing Bond Woman Lashana Lynch

James Bond fans hoping for details of the next film title or the singer of its theme tune will have been disappointed by the specifics released yesterday. What did transpire from Barbara Broccoli’s broadcast from Golden Eye, however, is that Bond’s 25th mission in Her Majesty’s Service, will be supported by a strong cast of females. Lea Seydoux, who is set to reprise the role of Madeleine Swann, and Naomi Harris, as Moneypenny, will be joined by newcomers Ana De Armas and Lashana Lynch, to act out the script edited by the brilliant Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

So, what’s the lowdown on Bond’s new leading ladies? Sci-fi aficionados might recognise De Armas from Blade Runner 2049, in which she played Ryan Gosling’s virtual love interest. The Cuban-Spanish actor will receive airtime prior to the Bond film release in 2020’s Danny Boyle-directed Beatles musical Yesterday, crime thriller The Informer and Knives Out, in which she will star alongside 007 himself, Daniel Craig.

Lynch, meanwhile, is of Marvel pedigree. The London-born actor of Jamaican descent most recently starred as Brie Larson’s fighter pilot ally in Captain Marvel, but made her cinematic debut in Fast Girls opposite Lily James in 2016. A quick scroll down her Instagram feed shows a penchant for bold fashion, which the world got a hint of at the Golden Eye photo op, and which will hopefully play out as the Bond mania grows.

While her co-stars opted for thigh-grazing dresses (Seydoux in black lace and leather Louis Vuitton, De Armas in a white lace mini and Harris in sunshine-yellow, one-shouldered Cushnie), Lynch plumped for pale blue co-ords courtesy of Emilia Wickstead. The seersucker top with square neckline and ballooning sleeves and high-waisted trousers singled her out in the line-up for all the right reasons.

The Bond 25 trail will likely go cold until the song and title go viral, but, for now, there’s @lashanalynch to inject some vibrancy into your feeds. As she said in her post announcing her role, the “cat’s finally outta the bag”.
