Why Victor Lindelof is not playing for Manchester United vs Burnley

Victor Lindelof was a notable absentee from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s starting XI for Manchester United’s clash with Burnley, with Phil Jones coming in to replace him.

Lindelof had started 22 of United’s 23 Premier League matches this season heading into the fixture but illness has ruled him out of contention.

It’s only Jones’ second league start of the season, having only lasted a half in a 3-3 draw with Sheffield United in November but he will partner club captain Harry Maguire against relegation-threatened Burnley on Wednesday evening.

United legend Rio Ferdinand said of the enforced change: ‘Phil wouldn’t have been in his plans for this game. Lindelof has been playing.

‘That’s part of being a professional footballer. Things change quickly and you have to be ready. Jones needs to see this as an opportunity.’

David de Gea, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Brandon Williams complete the backline, with Nemanja Matic, Fred and Andreas Pereira in front of them and Juan Mata, Daniel James and Anthony Martial in attack.

Burnley boss Sean Dyche was forced to make one change from their 2-1 win over Leicester City last time out, with Matt Lowton coming in for Phil Bardsley.

Bardsley misses the clash with his former side due to a back injury.
