Why Mason Greenwood was not in the Manchester United squad that beat Everton

Mason Greenwood came off the bench in the midweek Champions League defeat against Istanbul Basaksehir but he was not involved in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s squad for the trip to Everton. Manchester United secured a 3-1 win at Goodison Park in Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off, with Bruno Fernandes netting twice and Edinson Cavani getting his first goal for the club.

Why was Mason Greenwood not in the squad?

The Manchester Evening News reported on Friday that Greenwood was not part of provisional squad.

Solskjaer later revealed the 19-year-old was ill and not well enough to travel.

“Mason wasn’t feeling well last night,” the United boss told BT Sport.

“He looked well in training, he looked OK.

“But then he reported he was not well and can’t travel.”

Greenwood’s comes just days after being left of Gareth Southgate’s latest England squad.

The Three Lions have games against Ireland, Belgium and Iceland in the upcoming international break.

And although the United youngster has been left out this time, Southgate insists the player is still firmly part of his plans.

“He will be resilient enough he’s at a club that cares for young players very well and who have managed his trajectory very well and will continue to do that.

“I’ve spoken with Ole on that and we are aligned on him being the best player he can be.”

In other United team news, Luke Shaw was forced off in the second half of the win over Everton.

Marcus Rashford also picked up a knock late on, while Victor Lindelof has been nursing a back problem.

Solskjaer said: “Luke is his hamstring, it could be a long one.

“Marcus is struggling, it looked like a shoulder injury.”

He added: “It doesn’t look great. Victor, hopefully, not too bad but it’s his back as well.

“Any injury when it’s serious isn’t worth the points but the boys were not going to give anyone a chance to take three points off us, so determined.

“They (Shaw and Rashford) will be assessed and hopefully it’s not too serious but they looked in a bad way towards the end.”
