Why Man Utd legend Edwin van der Sar is holding up his return to Old Trafford

Edwin van der Sar has some reservations about returning to Manchester United as director of football.

That’s according to transfer expert Ian McGarry with Van der Sar strongly linked with a move back to Old Trafford in recent days.

United have been desperately searching for someone to oversee their transfer dealings following a number of failed signings.

Former Red Devils goalkeeper Van der Sar has been linked with the role though is the current chief executive of Ajax.

And the Dutch hero is reportedly concerned over what his exact role would be at Old Trafford and his authority when it comes to completing deals.

“Van der Sar does have some reservations,” McGarry said on the Transfer Window Podcast.

“He is keen to further his career but does have some scepticism about the current set-up at Carrington regarding the fact there are supposedly five heads of recruitment currently operating.

“And also has doubts, or hasn’t been given reassurances over his exact remit nor his authority in terms of finalising transfers.

“That is holding up his decision in making the move from Amsterdam to Manchester.”

Betting has been suspended on Van der Sar being given the job with Manchester United struggling on the pitch this season.

The Red Devils have won just one of their opening four Premier League games, picking up just five points.

They will look to bounce back when they face Leicester on Saturday at Old Trafford.

United’s last game saw them held to a 1-1 draw by Southampton, who played 20 minutes with ten men.

The only clean sheet for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men has been in the opening 4-0 win over Chelsea despite the Norwegian strengthening his back-line in the summer with moves for Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire.
