Why Man Utd deal is being held up – Old Trafford chiefs have long-term plan for star

Mata has been at the club since he signed from Chelsea in January 2014 for £37m.

But the Spaniard’s contract is now nearing its end – and with the summer transfer window approaching, it’s expected a multitude of clubs come in for his signature.

Manchester Evening News, however, are reporting that Mata is after a two-year deal – something that’s not usually offered to players over 30.

The report also states that United want Mata to become a club ambassador when he finishes his playing career.

Mata’s charitable work is said to have convinced club chiefs that the former Chelsea player would make the perfect ambassador for the club.

The role would give him the opportunity to further promote his Common Goal initiative, which encourages fellow professionals to donate 1 per cent of their salaries to non-profit organisations.

The initiative has so far seen an abundance of players and managers follow in Mata’s footsteps, raising £1.14m in the process.

Meanwhile, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes that his permanent appointment may help the club sort out the future of Mata and his compatriot Ander Herrera.

Herrera is also out of contract at the end of the season and is reportedly close to agreeing a deal with Paris Saint-Germain.

“At least now players that are being offered contracts, they know who their manager is going to be,” Solskjaer told Sky Sports.

“I know that I’m staying so it’s not just my advice anymore, it’s my wishes that we are working with.”

Herrera spoke of his future last month, noting that it was natural rumours would circulate about his future.

“I knew something would come out. I take it with a pinch of salt,” he said.

“I’m focusing on playing football in the remaining month and a half of the season.

“The rest I leave to my agent, both a possible contract renewal with United and talks with another club about my departure.

“I’m not going crazy about what is going to happen over the next four months because I don’t know if my stay here is over.”
