Why Man City are NOT the biggest threa facing Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool – Graeme Souness

That’s according to Liverpool legend Graeme Souness.

The Reds capped off a sensational season with a Champions League triumph over Tottenham in Madrid last Saturday.

That secured Jurgen Klopp his first trophy as Liverpool boss and ended a seven-year wait for silverware.

Liverpool had gone close to ending a 29-year title drought in the Premier League – which now rolls into a 30th year – but despite amassing 97 points, were one point shy of Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola’s side secured back-to-back titles even though Liverpool only lost one league game in 2018-19.

It is anticipated the two teams will lock horns again next year as City look to retain their crown a third season having picked up 198 points from a possible 228 over the last two years.

But former midfielder Souness thinks Liverpool should not worry about City and their unprecedented pool of resources, because their focus should be on ensuring their best players are not robbed by Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Liverpool have had countless stars taken from them since they last won a major honour like the Champions League in 2005 due to their lack of sustained success, with Fernando Torres, Luis Suarez and Raheem Sterling among the key stars to move on in search of glory.

And while the Merseyside outfit appear set to establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with domestically and on the continent on a consistent basis under Klopp, Souness still thinks the two La Liga heavyweights are a worry amid long-standing links to Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

“Liverpool are in fantastic shape for the next few years,” Souness told the Irish Independent

“You look at the goalkeeper, the back four, Joel Matip or Joe Gomez that’s a back five that can play together for eight or 10 years, barring injury.

“Trent Alexander-Arnold is going to be a fantastic player, he’s got a wicked right foot, Andy Robertson can be there for a long time.

“They can add to the squad they have now and improve the depth, but they have the basis of a team there that can go on for many years.

“The worry for Liverpool going forward is not Man City having all that firepower to spend but someone coming in for Salah, which I think they will to, Mane too, they will be high on the list of Real Madrid.

“Liverpool are in great shape, I wouldn’t be worried about them.”

Several of Liverpool’s stars are on international duty over the summer with the UEFA Nations League, the African Cup of Nations and the Copa America but the club’s first pre-season fixture takes place in America on July 19.

It remains to be seen whether Klopp will add any new players to his squad before then, with no specific targets having yet been mentioned for the summer window, which could be a quiet one at Anfield.
