Why isn’t Taylor Swift at the Grammy Awards 2020? The nominee bows out of performance & the ceremony as sexual harassment claims swirl

After bowing out of a Grammy Awards performance last week, Taylor Swift didn’t attend the ceremony all together.

The move by the singer who is nominated at the 62nd Grammy Awards ceremony for Song of The Year for her emotional hit, Lover alongside 3 other categories comes as Deborah Dugan, former head of the Grammys filed a lawsuit against the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. In the award season she alleged she was wrongfully fired after she raised allegations of sexual harassment and irregularities with Grammy nominations.

Deborah Dugan was the first woman to head up the Academy and held the position for 5 months before the jaw dropping allegations came to the fore.

Filled with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), The lawsuit, occurred just days after it was announced that Deborah Dugan was put on leave from the Academy due to, “misconduct.”

Deborah Dugan claims the move occurred 3 weeks after she sent an email to the Academy’s managing director of human resources where she outlined a number of shocking allegations against the organization and its “historically male dominated leadership,” according to the complaint.

Whilst the Recording Academy told CNN it was “curious” that the claims came after another co-worker of Deborah said she had, “created a ‘toxic and intolerable,” work environment and she exhibited, “abusive and bullying conduct.”

Taylor famously filed – and won – her own sexual harassment law suit against an ex-DJ who grabbed her bottom after putting his hand under her skirt during a pre-concert photo opportunity in 2013.

So it is widely thought Taylor snubbing the award ceremony is a result of the shocking allegations swirling around the Grammy awards. It also comes after she was snubbed from a number of categories she was expected to be nominated in for her album, Lover. Having previously won the Album of The year, the award ceremony’s top prize, for 1989 and Fearless she was not nominated in the category this year.

But as her new Netflix documentary, Miss Americana premieres this week, in which Taylor talks at length about using her voice for various causes including LGBTQ+ rights and political campaigns, the move to skip the ceremony entirely may be another step in Taylor using her voice – or in this case her silence – for the greater good.
