EASTENDERS fans were left shocked when Sonia was revealed as the mystery thief who’d tried to swipe £5,000 from her grandma Dot.
A flashback showed the nurse logging out of the online banking account on the BBC One soap – but why would she try and steal Dot’s money?

What is Sonia’s theft storyline in EastEnders?
Explosive Christmas Day scenes saw Dot realise someone had tried to steal £5,000 from the money that Dr Legg had left her.
Her granddaughter Dotty was quick to blame Martin but Sonia immediately jumped to his defence.
On New Year’s Day, a flashback to Christmas Day’s dramatic events showed Dotty starting to piece together the clues over who the culprit is.
But Sonia stopped her in her tracks by pretending to phone Dot’s bank to contact the fraud team.
The bank wouldn’t even be open on Christmas Day though – and it soon also became clear that the phone lead wasn’t actually plugged in.
Later, fans watched on as Sonia opened her laptop to a tab on Dot’s online banking, showing a hefty balance.
So it was in fact Sonia who tried to steal the cash. But will she come clean to Dot?

Why did Sonia steal Dot’s money in EastEnders?
Sonia’s reasons for trying to rob £5,000 from Dot’s bank account are still unknown.
It could be something to do with her dodgy ex-husband Martin, who she is still in love with – and who will be in need of money to make his fresh start away from Walford after staging Keanu Taylor’s death.
But there may be another reason she needs the cash – fans will just have to wait to find out.

Fans flocked to Twitter after the dramatic New Year’s episode to guess why Sonia had tried to steal the money.
One fan tweeted: “Didn’t expect that from Sonia and then she had the nerve to pretend to be on the banks fraud line! What did she need the money for… a new trumpet?!” (sic)
Another said: “Sonia took Dot’s money to pay for a flight for Keanu to go and live in Portugal, so Martin will fall back in love with her.”
