Who was Andrew Weatherall and how did the Primal Scream producer die?


PRIMAL Scream  producer Andrew Weatherall was a key figure in the music industry setting dance floors alive with his electronic DJ sets.

Who was Andrew Weatherall?

Andrew Weatherall was a British musician born April 6, 1963, in Windsor.

He started out as a freelance music journalist before Danny Rampling gave him a regular slot DJing at nightclub Shoom.

He then had a part in setting up a record label under the name of Boy’s Own Recording.

His first go at studio work was alongside Paul Oakenfold on club remix Hallelujah for the Happy Mondays, becoming one of the key DJs in the acid house movement of the late 1980s.

His notable remix of Soon by My Bloody Valentine  was ranked as the best remix ever by music magazine NME in 2011 – placing him firmly in the limelight.

He formed experimental group The Sabres of Paradise in 1992 before eventually going on to produce artists like Beth Orton and Primal Scream and also remixing tracks from The Orb, Bjork and many more.

In 2006 he released his own solo EP The Bullet Catcher’s Apprentice

Andrew’s famous production of Primal Scream’s breakthrough third album Screamadelica in 1991 won the band it’s first Mercury Prize selling over 3 million copies.

Andrew told NME:”I was being asked to do it….I knew how a record should work”

He added “I just carried on remixing Screamadelica in my bumbling, ignorant, up-myself kind of way. Looking back, my arrogance made me wince…I’d gone from bumming around to all of a sudden being part of a proper scene. I was at the centre of the cyclone and loving it.

How did the Primal Scream producer die?

Andrew Weatherall died on February 17, 2020, at Whipps Cross Hospital in London, aged 56.

The cause of death was a pulmonary embolism.

His management released a statement saying: “He was being treated in hospital but unfortunately the blood clot reached his heart. His death was swift and peaceful”

He continued to work as a DJ until his death.

Musicians paid tribute to this legendary producer and DJ with Charlatans’ singer, Tim Burgess writing on Andrew Weathall: “Weatherall was a font of all things amazing when it came to music. I’ll miss his enthusiasm and his ace recommendations. A good friends and inspiration to so many”
