Made In Chelsea star James Taylor riled up the masses this week when he claimed he’d sold a free PS5 console for ‘£1,200 profit’.

The reality star, who said he preferred the PS4, bragged on social media that he was sent a free PlayStation 5 console – which costs £499.99 in the stores – by Sony, but ended up selling it.

It didn’t take long for irate gamers to criticse him for being ‘disrespectful’ and ‘in bad taste’ – especially as many were still scrambling to get their hands on the latest gaming instalment.

Turns out the whole thing was for a laugh (in fact, the PS5 from his now-deleted post was a friend’s) but that didn’t stop the intense backlash that was directed at the star, with James addressing the palaver and insisted the amount of trolling he received was ‘hilarious’.

He said in part in a statement to Metro.co.uk: ‘In light of taking the p**s out of the current influencer market, I merely intended to show how misleading an influencer can be at my own expense.

‘The details are as follows: No, ‘PlayStation’ didn’t gift me a PS5 (are you mad? I’ve only got 43.9K followers, PlayStation doesn’t even know who I am).’

Who is James Taylor?

The 25-year-old joined the E4 series for its 14th season in 2017 alongside Digby Edgley, Sophie ‘Habbs’ Habboo (who dates Strictly Come Dancing star Jamie Laing) and Clementine Cuthbertson.

First appearing on the show to teach Sam Prince to play polo (of course) he soon became a series regular and is currently dating fellow MIC star Maeva D’Ascanio.

He took a break for the current, 19th season though, deciding to stay and do a ski season in France during filming.

What did he say about the PS5?

James caused quite the stir when he suggested he’d offloaded a free PS5 on eBay for over £1,000 profit, before revealing it was all a joke.

His full statement addressing the furore read: ‘In light of taking the p**s out of the current influencer market, I merely intended to show how misleading an influencer can be at my own expense.

‘The details are as follows: No, ‘PlayStation’ didn’t gift me a PS5 (are you mad? I’ve only got 43.9K followers, PlayStation doesn’t even know who I am).’

‘The PlayStation 5 was a friend’s. I did not sell the PlayStation 5 ‘for a profit’ as I never ‘sold’ anything.

‘I currently have a PlayStation 4 and I am very content with it.

‘The amount of trolling I have received is quite hilarious as the people that I have message [sic] are extremely tunnelled-visioned and believe whatever they see on social media.’
