How did Laura and Corbyn meet?

Alvarez met Corbyn in 1999 at a Latin American support group after flying from her native Mexico to be with her sister, Marcela who had been living in London with her daughter Jasmin, then seven.

Corbyn had been helping Marcela with a custody battle and through doing this he met Alvarez.

At this point the Labour MP was single after divorcing his previous and second wife, Chilean exile Claudia Bracchitta in 1999.

After Alvarez flew back to Mexico the pair conducted a long distance relationship.

They married in her native Mexico in 2013.

Jezza and his second wife, Chilean exile Claudia Bracchitta, have three sons together.

They split in 1999 after 12 years of marriage in a row over whether or not to send their kids to a grammar school or the local comprehensive.

He was married to his first wife, academic Jane Chapman, from 1974 to 1979.

What is Laura’s job?

She is a banker and human rights lawyer from Mexico.

Laura’s early career involved studying law in Mexico, and she later started working as a banker to help rural communities.

After marrying Corbyn, she gave up her banking career and moved to England.

In London, Laura had a brief stint as a humans-right activist and worked for the National Commission of Human Rights Commission as the administrator.

She is often seen speaking at various debates and seminars.

After marrying Jeremy, she decided to do something more personal, so she opened a coffee beans store, Café Mam in 2013.

What was the coffee controversy?

When she moved to London, where she moved into a £1million home in Islington with Corbyn, she scrapped her career in the financial industry and became an importer of fair trade coffee beans.

In 2015 Alvarez’s firm came under scrutiny amid reports her coffee was produced by farmers in Mexico’s poorest state, who earned 93p for each 500g bag which was then sold here for £10.

That year Alvarez declined an invitation from the Queen to attend a state banquet in honour of Chinese president Xi Jinping.

In a rare interview Ms Álvarez described Corbyn as “not very good at house work” but  “a good politician”.

According to reports, Alvarez and her husband enjoy nights in, watching Eastenders, drinking the odd glass of wine and eating food grown on his allotment.
