Tributes have been paid to Goldfinger actress Tania Mallet following the news that she has died aged 77.

It was reported that Mallet passed away over the weekend, with the official James Bond Twitter account confirming the sad news and saying: ‘Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this sad time.’

Fan sites also paid their respects, among them who described the actress as ‘a very classy and beautiful lady’.

Tania, who was a cousin of Dame Helen Mirren, began her career as a teen model and landed the role in the 1964 film opposite Sean Connery after it was said film bosses were sent a photo of her in a bikini.

Who did Tania Mallet play in Goldfinger?

Mallet starred in the 1964 movie as Tilly Masterson, the sister of Jill Masterson (played in the movie by Shirley Eaton) – who died in the movie from ‘skin suffocation’ after villain Auric Goldfinger covered her from head to toe in gold paint.

Tilly was out to avenge her sister’s death by killing Auric – but her character also met a grisly end after being killed by his manservant Oddjob when he hurled his steel-rimmed hat at her.

Despite Goldfinger’s success at the box office and subsequent offers, Goldfinger turned out to be Mallet’s only film appearance.

She instead chose to return to modelling, claiming she could earn more money from that career.

She was initially offered £50 a week for Goldfinger, which she managed to increase to £150 a week after negotiations – but was easily earning more than that a day as a model, using the money to pay for her brother’s education and support her mother.

However Mallet continued to prove popular with Bond fans, making appearances at fan conventions throughout her career.
