Who are 'Men In Black' thugs who attacked Man Utd chief Ed Woodward's family home?

On Tuesday evening, a video emerged on social media showing a flare being tossed over the gate of Ed Woodward’s Chesire home, while others chanted that he was “going to die”. The Manchester United executive vice-chairman has been the subject of growing fan discontent.

United are enduring their worst Premier League campaign to date.

The Red Devils are fifth in the table, a staggering 33 points behind leaders Liverpool.

United’s poor recruitment in recent years has also been widely criticised, with fans directing their anger towards Woodward and the club’s owners, the Glazer family.

Following the attack, the Old Trafford outfit released a statement that read: “Manchester United Football Club have tonight been made aware of the incident outside the home of one of our employees.

“We know that the football world will unite behind us as we work with Greater Manchester Police to identify the perpetrators of this unwarranted attack.

“Anybody found guilty of a criminal offence, or found to be trespassing on this property, will be banned for life by the club and may face prosecution.

“Fans expressing opinion is one thing, criminal damage and intent to endanger life is another. There is simply no excuse for this.”

Who are the ‘Men In Black’?

According to The Sun, “around 20” fans were seen outside Woodward’s home.

“So we decided to pay him a visit to tell him to his face. We didn’t get to speak to him but hopefully he’ll get the message because we’re not going away and we won’t stand around doing nothing while our club is ruined.”

The firm was originally known as the ‘Red Army’ but today the term most commonly used to describe fans of the club in general.

The hooligan group became known as the Men In Black in 1989 following a clash with West Ham fans in Brick Lane, London.

According to the Telegraph, the Manchester thugs were outnumbered but managed to overcome their rivals, with the name being derived from their dark hats and clothing.
