Whiten stained grout in 10 minutes with 3 cupboard staples – no vinegar or bleach needed

Grout is the space between tiles that often becomes stained and discoloured very quickly if it is not cleaned properly.

It tends to be tricky to clean as grout is very porous, meaning it has tiny holes and these pores can trap bacteria, dirt and other substances which can quickly build up.

If grout is not cleaned it can cause brown staining which looks very unsightly and will also eventually attract mould to your kitchen or bathroom.

However,  Lynsey Crombie, the UK’s most popular cleaning expert also known as the Queen of Clean, has shared that removing grout stains is very easy as long as you have the right cleaning supplies.

It may seem unusual, but Lynsey has shared that there are three simple ways to whiten grout with items you likely already have at home – which are toothpaste, shaving foam, and baking soda.

How to clean grout quickly and easily

All you have to do is first wipe the grout area with clean hot water, and apply your method of choice to get your grout sparkling white and clean once again.

Toothpaste

Toothpaste can be very effective for cleaning grout as it contains baking soda and peroxide, which both have natural whitening properties.

It is also mildly abrasive so can remove grime from grout without damaging the tiles and some toothpaste also have antibacterial agents which can reduce mould growth.

Lynsey said: “White toothpaste is a minty miracle.  Dampen a recycled toothbrush or damp grout cleaning brush with warm water, [then] apply toothpaste just as you would if you were brushing your teeth and work into the grout lines.

“Leave on the grout lines for a few minutes before rinsing away.”

Shaving foam

Shaving foam tends to be the easiest way to clean grout as it contains surfactants, which are compounds that can quickly penetrate the grout’s porous surface and dissolve the dirt or grime

Lynsey said: “This is the cheapest and hassle-free way of cleaning grout.

“Simply apply shaving foam on the grout lines, scrub in using a recycled toothbrush or grout cleaning brush, leave for 10 minutes and rinse with a damp microfibre cloth.”

Baking Soda

Baking soda is a popular natural cleaner as it can remove stains easily due slightly alkaline, which can easily break down acidic grease, dirt and other bacteria.

However, on its own baking soda can struggle to penetrate the grout which is why it is important to mix it with dish soap and warm water to make it form a paste.

Lysney said: “If you are looking to use a homemade cleaning product mix together bicarb and washing up liquid until you have a nice thick paste.

“Then apply to the grout lines, scrub in and rinse away. This paste is also great for shining up sinks and cleaning soap scum lines from the bath.”

Cleaning grout can be difficult, so once you have it clean again make sure to keep bathroom and kitchen tiles as dry as possible to prevent a build-up in the future.

Make sure to wipe down tiles which have become steamy after cooking or showing and then open a window to keep grout looking brand new for much longer.
