Student Taylor Richardson explained what happened shortly after she boarded her flight at Denver Airport on November 15.

The older man told cabin crew after she took her seat: “I don’t want to sit next to her [because] she is black.”

Taylor, who has been listed as Teen Vogue’s “21 under 21” to watch, added that while the flight crew were “caught off guard” by his comment, they were “very kind and discrete” in the way they handled his request.

They then moved him elsewhere on the plane.

However, Taylor was praised for her calm response in dealing with the situation.

She explained: “It could have been worse. I’m home, I’m safe and the truth is unless he changes and people like him change it won’t be my last encounter. I just continue to do me.

“He’s a grown man and I’m just 16yo so being silent and showing respect I feel showed volume! Love not hate!”

She added that she “wasn’t sure” where he was moved to: “I decided to eat my pizza and remain calm and unbothered. Going high in low moments!”

Many said that she should have been moved to first class, but she explained that it was full and she stayed in her own seat.

Taylor added that at least it meant she had an empty seat next to her for the duration of the flight.

United Airlines replied to her via private message, saying: “Please know we sincerely regret that this was your experience, as we never want our customers to feel any sort of discomfort while flying and truly appreciate your understanding”.

“We always strike to leave a good impression on our customers and want you to know we care.”

Black Eyed Peas singer Will.I.Am accused Qantas of racism after being met by the police at the airport.
