Whip up your favourite nostalgic pudding at home without breaking the bank — plus win £50,000 in the Sun Savers raffle

DO YOU have sweet memories of your old school puddings?

One recent poll found 58 per cent of over-fifties look back fondly on the puddings they had during school dinners. So why not turn back the clock?

Here is how to whip up the classics at home without blowing all your pocket money.

Jam roly-poly. I found an easy, free recipe online that uses just self-raising flour (45p for 1.5kg at Asda), butter (69p at Tesco), sugar (99p at Aldi), jam (28p at Aldi) and water. That’s a total of £2.41 and the best bit is that you’ll have ingredients left over to make something else. Plus, if you don’t quite have the time you can pick up a frozen Aunt Bessie’s Jam Roly Poly for £1.50 at Tesco — cheaper than Sainsbury’s £2.95 Jam Roly Poly dessert.

Treacle tart. You need a lot of ingredients to be able to make this delight yourself, but if you head to Sainsbury’s you can grab Mr Kipling’s Treacle Tart for £2. It serves six and is delicious. However, if you are up for a challenge of going DIY, I like the recipe found on bbcgoodfood.com — it serves ten and takes around an hour to whip up.

Spotted dick. This has to be my favourite school pudding and, good news, making it yourself couldn’t be easier. For a pudding that serves six all you need is self-raising flour, shredded suet (86p at Morrisons), currants (£1.75 at Sainsbury’s), sugar, one lemon (25p at Sainsbury’s) an orange (30p at Asda) and some milk. And, of course, don’t forget the custard (70p at Tesco). If you’d rather have a ready-made one then pop to Asda to get two for £1.25, cheaper than £2 at Morrisons.

Rice pudding. You can have rice pudding for dessert and breakfast. You’ll need milk, pudding rice (97p at Asda), sugar and butter. There are plenty of easy recipes online. The best bit is that you can freeze any leftovers and enjoy them at a later date.  But, if you’re feeling lazy or want your rice on the go, you can grab ten individual pots of Muller Rice for just £3 at Asda (30p a pot), which usually cost 68p each.
