It’s almost time to return to Downton Abbey, as the new movie is about to be released.

The film, which takes place one year after the end of the popular TV show, is due to hit cinemas on Friday, 13 September.

It will see the likes of Michelle Dockery as Lady Mary Talbot, Hugh Bonneville as the Earl of Grantham, Elizabeth McGovern as the Countess of Grantham, Jim Carter as Charles Carson, and Dame Maggie Smith as the Dowager Countess/reigning queen of throwing shade all returning to the hallowed halls of Downton.

As for the real-life filming location, even though Downton Abbey doesn’t technically exist, the show and the movie were both shot in and around a very real castle…

Where was the Downton Abbey movie filmed?

Both the Downton Abbey TV series and the movie were filmed largely as Highclere Castle, which was used to represent Downton Abbey itself.

The castle and its 5,000-acre estate can be found in Hampshire.

The building was first built in 1679, but has seen a fair amount of remodelling since then.

As well as being where Downton Abbey was filmed, Highclere was also a filming location for Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry’s Jeeves and Wooster.

The Highclere Castle website states that the castle’s current occupants, The Earl and Countess of Carnarvon ‘were delighted to welcome back old friends Hugh Bonneville, Maggie Smith, Michelle Dockery, Elizabeth McGovern, Jim Carter and Phyllis Logan to tread the Castle boards.’

You can visit the castle yourself, as Highclere is open to visitors for self-guided tours during summer and for special occasions like Easter and Christmas.

There are also guided tours and ticketed events that you can go to, but these have been known to sell out, so if you’re keen you’d better get a shift on

Lady Carnarvon recently appeared on This Morning to share what it was like at the castle when there’s filming going on.

She said: ‘You don’t see the glamour. ‘You just see the computer village and cameras everywhere, and people in black parkas. And you see, the people they open every single window in February.’

Laughing, she added: ‘And they say, “oh it’s so cold how do you live here?” And it’s like, “we don’t open all the windows.”‘
