Where to go on holiday in November: Best holidays around the world to book now

Durham

One of the UK’s most beautiful cities – and counties – Durham is a great place to visit. It’s the sort of place that the UK does extremely well, with masses of history – the castle and cathedral are recognised as UNESCO World Heritage Sites – beautiful countryside but, for those who prefer their entertainment from the 21st century, plenty of modern touches and facilities too.

It’s also easy to get to: it’s around three hours by train from London, under two from Edinburgh, and also served by two nearby airports. In short, whatever length of break you’re considering – a day trip, a long weekend, or a week or more – Durham is worth considering.

What to see & do

We have to start with the Castle and Cathedral, don’t we? The site is regarded as one of the finest examples of Norman architecture in Europe and was started in 1093 under the orders of William The Conqueror. The Cathedral holds the relics of Saint Cuthbert, the remains of the Venerable Bede, three copies of the Magna Carta and, possibly, the head of St Oswald. Well, there’s definitely a head. The “possibly” comes because, at the last count, four other places in Europe also claim to have a head belonging to St Oswald… For those more interested in modern pursuits, the Cathedral may look very familiar and that’s because it’s been used as part of Hogwarts in the first Harry Potter film, appeared in Elizabeth with Cate Blanchett, and popped up again as Asgard in Avengers: Endgame.

Fans of Downton Abbey may also want to note that the nearby Beamish, the Living Museum, featured in the recent film version. Those interested in history may also want to note that this living, working museum is a brilliant place to visit, where costumed workers bring to life scenes from the 19th and 20th centuries.

November is a great month to visit as it’s the time of Lumiere, the UK’s largest light festival, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary in Durham in 2019 (November 14-17). The city becomes a remarkable outdoor gallery during this time, for what the organisers describe as a “nocturnal art trail.” Best of all, it’s free.
