Where to eat, drink and stay in Portland, Oregon

Where to eat

Voodoo doughnuts

Where to start? First, head to Voodoo Doughnut (voodoodoughnut.com), which is open 24 /7 and has queues around the block. It started as a hole-in-the-wall 16 years ago and now has cult status (you’ll spot people walking around with the Pepto-Bismol-pink boxes). For something more virtuous but equally delicious, there’s a fine dining vegan tasting menu at Farm Spirit (farmspiritpdx.com) in the north-east of the city. Portlanders take brunch very seriously (it is a hipster haven, after all), as do the chefs at Middle Eastern-inspired Tusk (tuskpdx.com), where eating platefuls of whipped hummus at 10am is totally normal. And for a hidden gem, try the egg sando at Japanese deli Giraffe (giraffegoods.com), or stop in at Le Pigeon for the lobster-stuffed fried chicken — you won’t regret it (lepigeon.com).

Where to stay

The Hoxton

The Hoxton (thehoxton.com/Portland) is the new hot hotel on the block, and you can feel it as soon as you step into the low-lit lobby, buzzing with good-looking people tucking into tacos at restaurant La Neta. Situated on the edge of Old Town (right by the famous neon Portland Oregon sign), the rooms have large, warehouse-style windows and are decorated with walnut panelling and beautiful mid-century furniture.

What to do

Japanese Garden

On a clear day, head to Pittock Mansion to explore Portland’s history and walk back to town via the Japanese Gardens (japanesegarden.org). Make sure you leave time to visit the world’s largest independent bookstore, Powell’s (powells.com), and for a great introduction to the food and drink scene, sign up to The Big Foody Food Tour (thebigfoody.com). Guide Laura Morgan organises tastings at some of the city’s best producers, including charcuterie at Olympia Provisions (olympiaprovisions.com) and tea at Steven Smith Teamaker (smithtea.com).

Where to adventure-seek

Columbia River Gorge (Alamy Stock Photo)

In just an hour’s drive from Portland you can be in the Columbia River Gorge. Stay at the historic Hood River Hotel (hoodriverhotel.com) and venture into the mountains for snowshoeing with Mt Hood Outfitters (mthoodoutfitters.com). In the summer, the river comes alive with watersports. Hire a kayak to explore local waterfalls or try yoga on a stand up paddle board (hoodriversupandkayak.com). When you need to recharge head to the Ferment Brewery (fermentbrewing.com) for kimchi popcorn and a glass of nitro dry stout.

Where to drink

Pear brandy

You’re never far from a good brew, whether it’s coffee or craft beer. Stumptown Coffee Roasters (stumptowncoffee.com) is where Portlanders start their day. Across the river in Central Eastside, have a tasting flight at Hair of the Dog (hairofthedog.com) or work your way down the cocktail list at New Deal Distillery (newdealdistillery.com) — make sure you try the pear brandy. Downtown, Park Avenue Fine Wines (parkavenuewines.com) has a good list to help wash down its 100-layer meatless lasagne.
