Where is the hottest place in Spain?


SPAIN has the most diverse climate in Europe, from the cool Atlantic coast in the north to the scorching tourist resorts of the Mediterranean.

It’s generally true that the further south you go the warmer it gets. But different areas are better to visit at different times of the year.

Where is the hottest place in Spain?

Andalusia is the hottest area in Spain and the whole of Europe. Cities such as Seville and Cordoba average above 36 degrees in the summer.

Seville is the hottest city in Spain, with an annual average of 19 degrees. Every year there are multiple days which are hotter than 40 degrees.

The city’s annual average temperature is 25.4 degrees during the daytime while it dips to just 13 degrees at night.

However, in the summer months of May and June, Madrid can push a few degrees above Seville, if only briefly.

What is the hottest temperature in Spain?

Seville has a disputed historical record high of 50.0°C, but this was back in 1881 and pre-dates modern recording methods.

The highest official temperature record belongs to another Andalusian city, Montoro, which reached 47.3 degrees in July 2017.

Seville and Cordoba regularly see temperatures above 35 degrees in the height of summer when Spain’s temperatures hit their peak.

Sometimes inland areas like Madrid can push hotter in these months because they lack the cooling coastal breezes.

For example, Madrid has a cooler average July-August temperature of 32 degrees, but it can hit 38. Seville can hit 35, but normally only briefly.

Even in winter Seville is the warmest place in Spain, with temperatures of around 16 degrees in December.

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit depends largely on what kind of holiday you seek.

In the months January to April temperatures across Spain vary around the teens, so it’s great for an active break such as hiking or cycling.

Temperatures in Spain are in the low to mid 20s in May and June, so perfect for lighter activity holidays or a city break.

In the summer months the Costa Del Sol on Andalusia’s coast has a blistering average temperature of 35 degrees and very little rain.

Even the cooler northern coast regions such as Bilbao can hit over 25 degrees in late summer.

In Autumn, the hottest region of Andalusia is in the late 20s to early 30s and Madrid is only slightly cooler, while Barcelona is around 25 degrees, but with warm seas.

Temperatures across Spain drop rapidly from September to October, but it’s a good season for a wine tour.

Where is the hottest place at Christmas?

Seville is again the warmest place at Christmas, with temperatures of around 16 degrees.

Northern areas are much chillier at this time of year, with La Coruna in the north west averaging 13 degrees and Bilbao similar.

Madrid drops to 10 degrees at this time, Barcelona on the east coast is around 14 degrees and Mallorca is similar.

Seville and Barcelona still average five hours of sunshine in December, but also a higher chance of rain.

Where else is hot in Spain?

The Canary Islands, off the west coast, are part of Spanish territory and boast year-round warmth, with an August average of 24 degrees.

Also, the Balearic Islands such as Ibiza, Menorca and Mallorca all have annual average temperatures of 20 degrees.

Barcelona is one of the most popular tourist cities in the world and boasts just 60 days of rain a year regular days of 28 degree heat in the summer months.
