Eurovision has given us some pretty memorable winners over the past few years – including 2017 champion Salvador Sobral.

The singer, who triumphed at the contest in Kiev with his gentle ballad Amar Pelos Dois, not only landed Portugal their first ever contest victory after 53 years of trying, but also won the hearts of fans and viewers with his superb performance on the night.

He went on to win the contest with the highest score in Eurovision history – an impressive 758 points – after winning both the jury and public televote on the night, the only artist to win both votes since the new scoring system was introduced in 2016.

That was two years ago – and Salvador made a reappearance at the 2018 final in Lisbon to perform and present the trophy to Israeli winner Netta – but what’s he up to these days?

Here’s what you need to know…

What is Salvador Sobral up to these days?

Having taken the Eurovision world by storm, Salvador took a break from music a few months later to focus on ongoing health issues, having suffered from a longstanding heart condition, giving an emotional final concert which saw him comforted by his sister Luisa as he broke down onstage.

Luisa, who wrote Amar Pelos Dois, had previously stood in for him at Eurovision rehearsals in Kiev which he was unable to attend on health grounds – and she joined him on stage after Portugal had won Eurovision for a touching reprise of Amar Pelos Dois.

Sobral; underwent a heart transplant in December of that year – and returned to the Eurovision stage in May 2018 to perform with Brazilian singer Caetano Veloso.

He also caused some controversy in 2018 after suggesting that Netta’s song Toy was ‘horrible’later having to hand the trophy to the Israeli singer when she won the contest.

More recently Sobral has returned to music, releasing his second album Paris, Lisboa on 29 March of this year.

The album, which features him singing in four languages, went on to top the album chart in Portugal.

The singer explained ahead of the release how his heart transplant operation encouraged him to begin working on new material.

‘I’m here, after all, this will continue,’ he said. ‘If everything goes well it’s better to start thinking of a new record.’

There’s been other happy news for Sobral also, as he got married at the end of last year to French actress Jenna Thiam – best known for her role in The Returned.

And he’s also set to make his live debut in London next year – playing a show at the Barbican Hall on February 20 2020.

The Eurovision Song Contest final is on BBC One on Saturday night from 8pm.
